WordPress or Wix for a small business?

By Martin Kenyon, founder of Mako Digital · Updated 2 October 2026

The short answer

Wix suits a small business that wants to build a simple site itself, quickly, and is happy to pay a monthly fee for as long as the site exists. WordPress suits a business that wants a site built around it, full control over how it looks and works, and the freedom to move it to another host or developer. Wix is easier to start. WordPress is more flexible and you own the result.

Wix compared with WordPress
Wix WordPress
Who builds it You, with drag and drop Usually a developer, or you with a theme
Cost A monthly subscription A one-off build plus yearly hosting
Ease of use Very easy to start Easy to update once it is built
Flexibility Limited to what Wix offers Almost anything can be added
Ownership The site lives on Wix and cannot be moved as it is You own it and can move it to any host
Best for Simple sites and tight budgets Growing businesses and custom needs

When is Wix the right choice?

When you want something online this week, your needs are simple, and you are comfortable doing it yourself. For a new business testing an idea it is a sensible, low-risk start. We would say so if you asked us.

When is WordPress the better choice?

Is one better for Google?

Either can rank. What matters is how the site is built: how fast it loads, how clearly the pages are written and how well it is structured. A custom-built WordPress site gives a developer more control over those things, which is why we build that way and avoid page builders.

Can I move from Wix to WordPress later?

Yes, but it is a rebuild. A Wix site cannot be exported and switched on somewhere else. The text and images are carried across and the site is built again, and your old page addresses are redirected so you keep your place on Google.

Common questions

Is WordPress free?

The WordPress software is free. You pay for the build and for hosting. At Mako Digital hosting and care are included for 12 months, then £99.99 a year.

Is WordPress hard to update?

No. Once the site is built, changing text and photos is straightforward, and we show you how.

What about Squarespace?

It is similar to Wix: a monthly subscription, easy to build yourself, and the site stays on their platform.

Do you build on Wix?

No. We build custom WordPress themes, without page builders.

How much does a WordPress website cost?

A Starter website is £749 and a Business website starts from £2,499.99, plus VAT.
