How to choose a web designer in Wigan

By Martin Kenyon, founder of Mako Digital · Updated 2 October 2026

The short answer

To choose a web designer in Wigan, check seven things: that they can show you real websites they built, that their reviews are on Google where you can verify them, who will actually do the work, that the price is fixed in writing, that you will own the website and domain, what the site costs to keep running, and how they will help you get found on Google.

Questions to ask a web designer before you hire them
Ask this A good answer A warning sign
Can I see websites you have built? Links to live sites for real, named businesses Screenshots only, or demo sites with no client
Where are your reviews? On Google, written by named clients Only on their own website
Who will build my site? A named person you can speak to It is passed to someone you never meet
What will it cost? A fixed price in writing before work starts An hourly rate with no upper limit
Will I own it? Yes: the site, the domain and the content You rent it and lose it if you leave
What does it cost each year? A clear hosting and care price Vague, or "we will sort that later"
How will people find it? A plan for Google and local search No mention of search at all

What are the options for getting a website in Wigan?

There are four realistic routes, and each suits a different business:

How much should a website cost?

It depends on the size of the site and what it has to do. At Mako Digital, a Starter website is £749 and a Business website starts from £2,499.99, plus VAT, with 12 months of hosting and care included. Custom websites and software are quoted after a free scoping call.

Does it matter if the designer is local?

Not for the quality of the build, but it helps in practice. A local designer can meet you, understands the area you serve, and is easier to hold to account. Most of our clients are in Wigan and the North West, although we also work remotely with businesses elsewhere in the UK.

How does Mako Digital answer these seven questions?

You can see live client sites on our work page. Our reviews are on Google. Martin, the founder, builds every project himself. Prices are fixed in writing before work starts. You own the finished site. Hosting and care are included for 12 months and are £99.99 a year after that. Every site is built so that Google can read it properly from day one.

Common questions

How long does it take to build a website?

A Starter website is typically live in around 2 weeks and a Business website in around 4 weeks, once we have your content.

Should I pay a deposit to a web designer?

A deposit is normal. Make sure the total price, what is included and the payment stages are written down before you pay anything.

What is a page builder, and does it matter?

A page builder is drag-and-drop software such as Elementor or Divi. Sites made with one are quicker to produce but often load more slowly. Mako Digital builds custom themes without page builders.

Who owns the domain name?

You should. Ask for the domain to be registered in your name or your company's name, so you can move it if you ever change supplier.

Do I need SEO as well as a website?

A well-built site gives you the foundations. If you are in a competitive trade, ongoing SEO is what moves you up the results. Our SEO plans start from £225 a month.
