The Brief

A bakery that needed a website to match the work.

Whittles Bakery is a family institution on Tunstall Lane, Pemberton. Third generation, re-opened in 2024, and doing things exactly the way they have always been done — everything homemade, from scratch, every single morning. Hot pies, pasties, cold pies, fresh cream cakes, sandwiches, bacon barms, pie and peas with gravy, and of course the legendary Kebab Pie: a creation so unlikely and so brilliant that people travel from across Greater Manchester just to get one.

They needed a website that matched the bakery. Not a template, not a menu platform, not something that looked like it was built for a chain. Something warm, handcrafted, and honest — that told the story, showed the food, and made it effortless for people to find them, know when they are open, and get in touch.

A one-page site was the right shape: a single scrollable destination that does everything a small bakery website needs to do. Hours, location, menu highlights, the family story, click-to-call, and Google Maps. Built fast, optimised for mobile (people search "bakery near me" on their phones while their stomach rumbles), and engineered to rank locally.

Our Approach

Five build decisions that shaped the final site.

Every Mako Digital build follows a documented approach — consistent across every project, calibrated to each client’s industry, brand, and customer journey.

01

A one-page site that does the job of five

Whittles didn't need a multi-page site. They needed a single, scrollable destination that handled everything — story, menu, opening hours, location, contact — without making customers click around. We structured the page as a vertical narrative: hero with the bakery name and call-to-call, the family story, the menu highlights, opening hours, location with Google Maps embed, and a contact section. One page, all the right information, in the order people want to find it.

02

A warm, handcrafted brand identity

The visual language reflects the bakery. Warm cream backgrounds, deep brown headlines, photography that shows the actual food rather than stock imagery. The typography pairs a serif display face with a clean sans-serif body for that "honest local independent" feeling — not corporate, not chain, not generic. It looks like it could only belong to Whittles.

03

Mobile-first because the customer is hungry on their phone

Bakery customers search Google on their phones while deciding where to grab lunch. The site loads fast, the phone number is one tap away, the opening hours are visible without scrolling on mobile, and Google Maps directions are one click. Core Web Vitals on the green end. Every interaction the hungry customer needs is friction-free.

04

Local SEO that owns "bakery Pemberton"

Bakery schema (a specific LocalBusiness subtype Google recognises), proper geo-coordinates, accurate opening hours in structured data, and page copy that mentions the actual location, the actual neighbourhood, and the actual product range. Whittles ranks for "bakery Pemberton", "kebab pie Wigan", "homemade pies Pemberton" because the SEO foundations are calibrated to what they actually sell, where.

05

A site that stays out of the bakery's way

Built on WordPress, hosted on Hostinger, owned outright. No monthly subscription fee, no platform lock-in, no dependency on the agency to make small changes. When Whittles change opening hours for Easter, add a new product, or update the family story, they can do it themselves through the WordPress admin. The site supports the bakery; it doesn't become another job to manage.

FAQs

Common questions about the Whittles build.

How much did the Whittles Bakery website cost?

Whittles took our standard one-page custom WordPress build at £149.99 fixed. That includes bespoke design, full local SEO setup, Bakery schema markup, Google Search Console submission, opening hours in structured data, and Google Maps integration. No add-on fees, no monthly retainer.

Why a one-page site for a bakery?

A one-page site is the right shape for a small independent bakery. Customers don't need to navigate twelve pages to find the opening hours — they need everything in one scroll: who you are, what you sell, when you're open, where you are, how to call. One properly built page outperforms a five-page site full of filler every time for this kind of business.

How long did the Whittles build take?

One week from brief to live. One-page builds at Mako Digital typically ship in five to seven working days when the content is ready and the brief is clear. Whittles had clear photography and a strong family story, so the build moved quickly.

Can a one-page site rank for local bakery searches?

Yes — Google ranks pages, not sites. A well-built one-page site with proper Bakery schema, semantic HTML, fast load speed, and content that genuinely answers customer queries will rank for focused local terms like "bakery Pemberton" or "homemade pies Wigan". The page count doesn't determine ranking; the build quality does.

What schema markup does Mako Digital include for bakeries?

Bakery (a specific LocalBusiness subtype Google recognises), opening hours specification (so the actual hours appear in Google search results), geo-coordinates, address, telephone, and FAQPage where relevant. The Whittles site uses 12 schema entities in total. All standard, none charged as an extra.

Why does a bakery need a website with proper SEO?

Because customers search Google on their phones while deciding where to grab lunch. A homeowner searching "bakery near me" or "homemade pies Wigan" expects to find a local independent on page one. A site with proper schema, real reviews, and clear menu information converts those searches into walk-ins and phone calls.

Where else does Mako Digital build websites in Wigan?

Across Wigan borough and the wider North West. The cluster network covers 19 towns including Hindley, Atherton, Westhoughton, Bolton, Horwich, Leigh, St Helens, Manchester, and beyond — see the full coverage map at /web-design-near-me/.

Can I visit Whittles Bakery?

Yes — Whittles is on Tunstall Lane, Pemberton, Wigan. Visit whittlesbakery.co.uk for opening hours, the full menu, and directions. Try the Kebab Pie.
