A website as powerful as the person behind it

Danny Sculthorpe is a former professional rugby league player who represented Wigan Warriors, Wakefield Wildcats, and Great Britain. After a career cut short by serious injury — and a deeply personal battle with mental health — Danny rebuilt his life and now speaks nationally and internationally about mental health, resilience, and the importance of talking.

Danny needed a website that matched the weight of his story. Not a generic speaker template with stock photos and a contact form — something that put his personality, his journey, and his message front and centre. The design had to be bold enough to stand out in a crowded speaking market while remaining accessible and human.

The brief covered a full personal brand build — custom WordPress theme, video hero, speaking topic pages, testimonials from event organisers, media appearances, and a booking enquiry form that captured the right information without creating friction. Everything SEO-structured so Danny ranks when organisations search for mental health speakers in his area.

Design that leads with the person, not the product
01

Brand Identity & Design Direction

Danny's palette — black, gold, teal, and purple — was chosen to reflect the duality of his story: the darkness of mental health struggle and the brightness of recovery and purpose. Bebas Neue for display headings gives the site the same bold, punchy energy Danny brings to a room. Montserrat for navigation and Source Sans 3 for body copy keep the reading experience clean and accessible. The overall effect is premium and powerful without tipping into corporate.

02

16-Template Custom WordPress Theme

The full site was built as a 16-file custom WordPress theme — every template written from scratch, no page builders, no bloat. Templates cover the homepage, full biography, speaking topics (mental health in sport, resilience, workplace wellbeing), testimonials, media appearances, mental health resources, blog archive and single post, contact, booking, and supporting pages. Each template is mobile-first and fully responsive, loading fast on every device.

03

Video Hero & Visual Storytelling

The homepage opens with a full-screen video hero — Danny in his element, speaking on stage. This is the single most important design decision on the site: within three seconds of landing, visitors see exactly who Danny is and what he does. The hero overlays his core message and a primary CTA to book a call, with a smooth scroll transition into the biography section below.

04

Booking Enquiry Form & Lead Capture

The booking form captures event type, preferred date, expected audience size, organisation, and a brief description of the event — everything Danny needs to respond with availability and a quote. Configured via WP SMTP to deliver reliably to his inbox, with each enquiry arriving as a clear, structured summary. The form is low-friction by design — enough to qualify the enquiry without creating barriers to conversion.

05

SEO Schema & Google Readiness

Danny's site is structured so Google understands exactly who he is. Person schema declares his name, occupation, description, and areas of expertise — making him eligible for Knowledge Panel visibility in branded searches. FAQPage schema covers common questions about booking and topics. BreadcrumbList schema throughout. Google Search Console verified on launch day, XML sitemap submitted, and all key pages manually requested for indexing.

Common questions about personal brand and speaker websites
Yes. The Danny Sculthorpe project is exactly that — a personal brand website built for a professional speaker and mental health advocate. The site is designed to establish credibility, communicate Danny's story and speaking topics clearly, and convert visitors into speaking enquiries. Everything from the typography and colour palette to the page structure and booking form is built around his personal brand rather than a generic speaker template.
A mental health speaker's website needs to lead with the person, not the product. It has to establish trust and credibility quickly — through the story, the credentials, the testimonials, and the tone. Danny's site opens with a video hero that puts him front and centre, followed by his personal story, his speaking topics, and social proof from event organisers and attendees. The booking enquiry form is simple and low friction — it captures what's needed without asking too much up front.
For Danny's site we built a 16-template WordPress theme covering homepage, about, speaking topics, testimonials, media appearances, mental health resources, blog, and contact. Not every speaker needs all of these — the right number of pages depends on the breadth of the speaker's offering and how much content they have to fill them. We plan the structure around the speaker's goals and the journey their prospective clients will take through the site.
For Danny's site we implemented Person schema with his name, description, social profiles, and areas of expertise — this tells Google who he is and what he does. We also added FAQPage schema for common questions, BreadcrumbList schema throughout, and structured data to support event and speaking engagement visibility in search. The combination makes the site much more competitive in searches for mental health speakers and motivational speakers in his area.
Yes. Danny's WordPress theme is built so he can update text, images, testimonials, and blog posts himself without needing developer support. We walked him through the CMS at handover and documented the key areas he'll need to update. For anything structural — new pages, layout changes, new features — we're available for ongoing support.
Yes. Mako Digital is based in Wigan and Danny is a local name — a former Wigan Warriors player who now speaks nationally about mental health. We've built websites for a wide range of Wigan-based businesses and individuals, from local tradespeople to professional speakers to community organisations. If you're based in Wigan or the North West and need a website, get in touch.
Danny's booking form captures the essentials without overwhelming the visitor — event type, preferred date, expected audience size, and a brief description of the event. This gives Danny everything he needs to assess the enquiry and respond with a quote or availability check. The form is configured via WP SMTP to deliver reliably to his inbox, with each submission including all the details in a clean, readable format.
